Star Union Spirits Navy Strength Dark Rum Wins Best in Class in Rum Category at ACSA Awards!
The 2021 American Craft Spirits Association has awarded Best in Class, Rum Category to Star Union Spirits in its annual spirits competition. Star Union Spirits earned five medal honors in this year’s awards. The five Star Union Spirits that were honored in the competition are as follows; Silver Medal Winner: Navy Strength Dark Rum, Bronze Medal Winners: Star Union Spirits Reserve Rum, American Silver Rum, Aged Apple Brandy, and Star Union Spirits Vodka.
A blind-tasting was conducted, with individual panelists compelled to evaluate each product separate from one another. Scores were submitted, tallied, and averaged, creating a competition based purely on numerical scoring rather than typical collaborative discussions.
This year, 550 entries were submitted from 42 states across the country in seven main categories: whiskey, gin, rum, vodka & grain spirits, brandy, distilled specialty spirits, and ready to drink (RTD). In addition to a Best of Show and the Best in Class distinctions, the judging panel awarded 12 Gold Medals, 228 Silver medals, and 242 Bronze Medals.

Best in Class distinctions, the highest honor in each of the seven judging categories, were awarded to a mix of both established, award-winning distilleries and younger newcomers. 2021 was Star Union Spirits’ second year of competition in the American Craft Spirits Association Awards.
In 2020, Star Union Spirits also brought home five medals but in the Brandy category. Star Union Spirits’ five award-winning spirits in the 2020 ACSA Competition are Single Barrel Immature Cabernet Sauvignon Brandy, Barrel-Aged Grappa, Cherry Brandy Eau De Vie, and Immature Cabernet Sauvignon Brandy Eau De Vie (ALL of which won Silver Medals); and Single Barrel Cherry Brandy (which won a Bronze Medal). The 2021 awards prove Star Union’s portfolio of spirits is diverse, unique, and of the highest quality.
Star Union Spirits was established by winemakers, Jeff Yosowitz and Bob Windy as a small craft distillery in Peru, Illinois at the historic Westclox building. It opened its doors to the public in November 2018. Casey Beall joined Star Union Spirits as Distiller in early 2019, adding experience, depth, and insight to its robust portfolio of award-winning spirits.
